Your Web Rankings Really Do Matter
If you aren't sure that your search engine ranking position truly does impact your bottom line, read on and you will have no doubts. What does your ranking mean to your business? Everything!
A careful examination of the percentage of clicks received by ranking position using multiple sets of data reveals the value of ranking in the top 3 positions of the organic (non-paid) search results. We will use three sets of data that, interestingly enough, were collected in very different ways yet yield very similar results.
While being a little on the older side, this first data sampling is provided courtesy of AOL. In a massive Oops moment in 2006, they accidentally released search result data to the public. You can read more at TechCrunch.
A second useful data sampling was compiled by Andrew Gerhart using actual Google Analytics data.
Finally we will use a third set of data from a study performed at Cornell University.
The thing that is very evident from all of these data sets is that businesses not in the top 10 do not have a chance of getting any significant number of eyes on their sites from the search engines. More importantly, if your business is not in the top 3 positions of the organic search results, your opportunity to benefit from internet traffic is significantly reduced.
